In the game
Rockstar hasn’t shown this, and we’re not going to pretend otherwise. This page is a travel idea. What we’ll say is that every GTA has loved a roadside oddity, and the Grassrivers shown in the trailers is a swamp with a two-lane road through it. A road like that, in Florida, collects oddities. The smallest post office in the United States looks like exactly the sort of thing the game draws on, and it’s on the way to everything else in this region anyway.
The real place
Ochopee is barely a place: a scatter of buildings on the Tamiami Trail at the western edge of Big Cypress. In 1953 a fire destroyed the general store that housed the post office, and the postmaster moved operations into a shed that had been used to store irrigation pipe for the tomato farms. The shed measures about seven feet by eight, and it never moved back out. It’s still a functioning post office with its own ZIP code, serving a few hundred people and the Miccosukee community, and it still has a postmaster inside during opening hours.
Standing in front of it is the entire experience. A white clapboard box with a flag and a post office sign, alone on a gravel pull-off, swamp behind it, a stream of cars slowing down to look. The detail a GTA fan will recognize is the scale joke: a federal building smaller than the truck parked beside it, in a landscape that goes on forever.
Go there
Pull in, take the photo, then do the thing that makes it worth the stop: buy a postcard inside, write it and hand it back, and it goes out with the Ochopee postmark. The window keeps short hours, usually weekday mornings into early afternoon and a brief window on Saturday, and closes for lunch, so check the current schedule on the postal service site and don’t arrive at 1pm expecting a stamp.
Ochopee has two other reasons to stop. Joanie’s Blue Crab Cafe, a mile or so east, is the lunch of the Tamiami Trail: blue crab, gator, frog legs and a screened porch over the swamp, with a live band some afternoons. And the Skunk Ape Research Headquarters, at the Trail Lakes Campground a little further along, is the gift shop and reptile house of Florida’s answer to Bigfoot, run with total sincerity. Between the three you have an hour well spent.
Everglades City is 15 minutes south, and the Big Cypress boardwalks are back east along the Trail.
One honest warning: the pull-off is right on a 60 mph highway and there’s no marked crossing. Park fully off the road, watch for trucks when you step back for the photo, and keep kids close.

- Everglades City and Chokoloskee: 15 minutes south for the crab town and the islands.
- Shark Valley and the gators: 45 minutes east on the Trail, back toward Miami.
