Grand Theft Auto VI releases on Thursday, November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. That date is the only timing fact that is official: Rockstar has not announced an unlock time. Anyone giving you the exact hour is guessing, so this page does something more useful. It lays out the two ways console launches usually unlock, shows what each would mean where you live, and will be updated the moment Rockstar says which one it is.
The two ways this could go
Scenario A: midnight local time, region by region. This is Rockstar’s own precedent. Its previous big console launches unlocked at midnight local time in each region, so players in Australia and Japan were in the game the better part of a day before California. “Local” has typically meant your console’s store region rather than where the console physically sits.
Scenario B: one global unlock time. Many publishers now flip the switch for the whole world at a single moment, usually landing at midnight in a big market and at odd hours everywhere else. It is simpler to run, it stops one region spoiling the story for another, and streamers everywhere start together. Rockstar has not used this model for a console launch before, but the industry has moved toward it since its last one, and there is no way to know until it says.
For Scenario B we need a reference time to show the math, so we use 12:00 AM US Eastern on November 19 as a clearly labelled hypothetical. It is not a leak, a rumor or a hint, just a round number in a big market. If Rockstar picks a different moment, every row in that table shifts by the same amount.
Scenario A: midnight local time (Rockstar’s precedent)
Under this model the game unlocks at 12:00 AM on Thursday, November 19, on your local clock, wherever you are. The last column shows each region’s midnight in US Eastern time, so you can see the order the world would get in.
| Region | Timezone on Nov 19 | Unlocks (local) | Same moment in US Eastern |
|---|---|---|---|
| Australia East (Sydney, Melbourne) | AEDT (UTC+11) | 12:00 AM Thu Nov 19 | 8:00 AM Wed Nov 18 |
| Japan | JST (UTC+9) | 12:00 AM Thu Nov 19 | 10:00 AM Wed Nov 18 |
| India | IST (UTC+5:30) | 12:00 AM Thu Nov 19 | 1:30 PM Wed Nov 18 |
| Eastern Europe (Athens, Kyiv, Helsinki) | EET (UTC+2) | 12:00 AM Thu Nov 19 | 5:00 PM Wed Nov 18 |
| Central Europe (Berlin, Paris, Madrid) | CET (UTC+1) | 12:00 AM Thu Nov 19 | 6:00 PM Wed Nov 18 |
| United Kingdom | GMT (UTC+0) | 12:00 AM Thu Nov 19 | 7:00 PM Wed Nov 18 |
| Brazil (Brasilia) | BRT (UTC-3) | 12:00 AM Thu Nov 19 | 10:00 PM Wed Nov 18 |
| US Eastern | EST (UTC-5) | 12:00 AM Thu Nov 19 | 12:00 AM Thu Nov 19 |
| US Central | CST (UTC-6) | 12:00 AM Thu Nov 19 | 1:00 AM Thu Nov 19 |
| US Mountain | MST (UTC-7) | 12:00 AM Thu Nov 19 | 2:00 AM Thu Nov 19 |
| US Pacific | PST (UTC-8) | 12:00 AM Thu Nov 19 | 3:00 AM Thu Nov 19 |
| Hawaii | HST (UTC-10) | 12:00 AM Thu Nov 19 | 5:00 AM Thu Nov 19 |
Brisbane and the rest of Queensland do not observe daylight saving and sit an hour behind Sydney. US, UK and European clocks will already be on winter time, which the offsets above reflect.
Scenario B: one global unlock (hypothetical: 12:00 AM US Eastern)
This table is a hypothetical. Rockstar has not announced a global unlock time, and 12:00 AM Eastern is our reference point, not a report. If a single global time is announced, we will replace this table with the real one.
| Region | Timezone on Nov 19 | Unlocks (local) |
|---|---|---|
| US Eastern | EST (UTC-5) | 12:00 AM Thu Nov 19 |
| US Central | CST (UTC-6) | 11:00 PM Wed Nov 18 |
| US Mountain | MST (UTC-7) | 10:00 PM Wed Nov 18 |
| US Pacific | PST (UTC-8) | 9:00 PM Wed Nov 18 |
| Hawaii | HST (UTC-10) | 7:00 PM Wed Nov 18 |
| United Kingdom | GMT (UTC+0) | 5:00 AM Thu Nov 19 |
| Central Europe (Berlin, Paris, Madrid) | CET (UTC+1) | 6:00 AM Thu Nov 19 |
| Eastern Europe (Athens, Kyiv, Helsinki) | EET (UTC+2) | 7:00 AM Thu Nov 19 |
| India | IST (UTC+5:30) | 10:30 AM Thu Nov 19 |
| Japan | JST (UTC+9) | 2:00 PM Thu Nov 19 |
| Australia East (Sydney, Melbourne) | AEDT (UTC+11) | 4:00 PM Thu Nov 19 |
| Brazil (Brasilia) | BRT (UTC-3) | 2:00 AM Thu Nov 19 |
Under this model, players west of the East Coast get the game on the evening of Wednesday the 18th, Europe wakes up to it, and Australia gets it in the afternoon (Brisbane at 3:00 PM).
Pre-loading
Pre-loading, where a digital pre-order downloads ahead of time and sits locked on your console until the unlock moment, is standard on both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, so expect it here. What has not been announced is the pre-load window: how many days before November 19 the download opens. Big releases often open it several days ahead, but that is a general pattern, not a Rockstar statement. Watch the Rockstar Newswire and your console’s store listing, and once pre-loading opens, start it early; launch-week downloads are slow for everyone.
Two things we are deliberately not telling you, because nobody outside Rockstar knows them: the file size, and whether there is a day-one update. When either is announced we will add it. If you are buying on disc, pick it up in the days before launch; the console may still need to download an update before you play.
What you can do now
Clear storage; a nearly full drive is the most common launch-day problem on both platforms. Check the console’s date, time and region settings, since a wrong clock has stopped people unlocking games before. If you pre-ordered digitally, confirm it is in your library. And if you are planning a trip to the real Leonida to celebrate, the trips section is where to start.
What time does GTA 6 come out?
Nobody knows yet. Rockstar has announced the date, Thursday, November 19, 2026, but not the hour. The tables above show what the two usual models would mean in your timezone; we will update when Rockstar announces.
Will GTA 6 unlock at midnight?
If Rockstar follows its own precedent, yes, at midnight local time in each region. If it uses a single global unlock, it will be midnight somewhere and a different hour everywhere else. Until Rockstar says, treat both as possible.
Can I pre-load GTA 6?
Pre-loading is standard for digital pre-orders on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, so almost certainly yes. The pre-load start date has not been announced.
How big is the download, and is there a day-one patch?
Neither has been announced. We will not guess a number, and neither should anyone else.
Is GTA 6 coming to PC, PS4, Xbox One or Switch?
No version has been announced for any platform other than PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
When does the online mode start?
No date has been announced for it.
Which edition should I buy?
Pre-orders are live at $79.99 for Standard and $99.99 for Ultimate. Rockstar’s store pages list what each includes; contents can change before launch, so we do not repeat them.
